Readings and prayers for today

CompassionListen first Β· Sunday, September 13

A compassionate gaze

Jesus holds rest and compassion together. You can care without living exhausted, and pause without turning away from someone who needs support.

Prayer

Jesus, teach me your rhythm: to step away when I need rest and respond when love calls. Free me from both indifference and the kind of exhaustion that breaks me down. Amen.

Jesus cares for small beginnings

The mustard seed reminds us not to dismiss small beginnings or measure faith by what draws attention.

Read the prayer

Jesus, when I compare my path with others, help me care for the small good I can do today. Teach me to listen closely, keep a promise, and offer kindness without seeking applause. Give me patience to grow at your pace and humility to learn again. Let my faith take root in your teaching and find room to bear fruit. Amen.

Reflection

The disciples were behind closed doors and filled with fear when Jesus stood among them and offered peace. His presence did not deny what had happened; it opened a safe space to breathe, recognize him, and listen again.

The peace of Jesus can accompany you while you sort through messages, responsibilities, and real concerns. You do not need to answer everything with the same urgency: pause, identify what matters, and choose one calm step.

Prayer

Jesus, stand amid the noise surrounding me today. Order my attention, quiet my reactions, and teach me to respond from your peace. Amen.

Jesus welcomes the little ones

Jesus welcomes children tenderly and corrects those who block their way; his example calls us to listen, care, and protect.

Read the prayer

Jesus, teach me to welcome little ones with the tenderness and respect you showed. Give me patience to hear their questions, recognize their feelings, and protect their safety. Help me set boundaries that protect without humiliating and ask for support when my strength runs low. May my words and actions remind them that their dignity deserves attention and care. Amen.

Serving with love

Devotion becomes visible when it feeds, visits, welcomes, and cares. Serving someone who needs support honors the dignity Jesus recognizes in every person.

Prayer

Jesus, do not let my faith remain only in words. Teach me to share in practical and respectful ways, without putting recipients on display, and to recognize your image in every life. Amen.

Inspired by Matthew 25:34–40

Faith turns its eyes toward Jesus amid the wind

His presence allows you to recognize fear, ask for help, and continue humbly without pretending circumstances are easy.

Reflection

Peter dared to step out of the boat, felt afraid when he noticed the wind, and asked for help. Jesus held him. The account does not present faith without hesitation, but a relationship in which fear can become an honest request.

Trusting Jesus does not guarantee a life without storms or difficult decisions. It invites you not to hide fear, to examine your steps, and to seek support before panic takes control.

Prayer

Jesus, amid the wind turn my eyes toward you. Give me humility to ask for help, wisdom to recognize my limits, and faith to take the next step. Amen.

Jesus draws near to those others avoid

Jesus sees dignity before labels and teaches us to turn distance into listening, respect, and compassion.

Read the prayer

Jesus, you draw near without contempt and see the dignity others overlook. Show me whom I avoid because of fear, prejudice, or convenience. Give me a heart willing to listen before judging, words that do not humiliate, and actions that respect each person's boundaries. Teach me to offer concrete companionship without imagining myself a savior and to recognize you in those often left at the margins. Amen.

Comfort for the journey

Tears do not contradict faith. Jesus draws near to grief and allows us to move through loss without pretending or rushing.

Jesus is still in the boat

When fear shakes the heart, the presence of Jesus invites us to trust and cross the storm without walking alone.

Read the prayer

Jesus, when fear shakes my heart and I cannot control what is happening, remind me that I do not cross the storm without your presence. Give me calm to breathe, wisdom to recognize the next step, and humility to receive help. Sustain my faith without denying my fear, and teach me to trust you whether the waters grow still or I must keep crossing them. Amen.

His humility turns simple actions into dignified care without seeking superiority, applause, or control over others.

Reflection

Jesus knelt to wash his disciples' feet. From a position of authority, he chose a humble and concrete task, showing that greatness in his way does not need to dominate in order to be seen.

Serving like Jesus may look like listening carefully, sharing a burden, or faithfully completing an overlooked responsibility. Christ-centered service protects dignity and does not turn help into a debt.

Prayer

Jesus, form your humility in me. Show me one concrete way to care today, and free me from serving in order to control or receive recognition. Amen.
